36 I. THE HOLOCAUST IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICA The mandate of the Commission provided new possibilities for the scope of commemorative activities. It opened up the whole realm of secular society for Holocaust commemoration. In its initial year, the Commission established a national civil commemoration of the Holocaust; statewide observances modeled after the central national event; proclamations of Days of Remembrance by every level of national, state, and local government; school and library displays of Holocaust-related material; media recognition of the Days of Remembrance through television programming, public service announcements, editorials and op-ed pieces, talk shows and other radio broadcasts.

THE HOLOCAUST IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICA felt inextricably connected. When they came to Washington, they offered their experience as part of the American drama, to which they also belonged. A second example of Americanization of the Holocaust has occurred in high school classrooms. In 1979—81, a team of educational researchers, psychologists, historians, and sociologists worked on a study of four different Holocaust curricula — material developed by teachers and students in Great Neck, New York; Brookline, Massachusetts; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and New York City, along with the written curricula of several other cities.

Common to all these examples are two principles for dealing with events analogous but not equivalent to the Holocaust. The analogies must be historically authentic, and they must illuminate other dimensions of the Holocaust and the analogous event. If these principles are followed, we need not fear engaging in analogies that illumine scholarship and memory. Comparison will neither trivialize nor dejudaize the Holocaust. 3. Public Commemoration of the Holocaust Scores of works present liturgies of Holocaust commemoration, but few have examined the ceremonies critically.
