It is possible, therefore, that if, as Annis and Liban point out, studies were carried out to determine which treatment modalities are most suitable for which patients, the success rates might be much higher than they are at present. This is an exciting concept well worth further investigation. It would apply not only to possible differential therapeutic approaches for men and women but also to subgroups of men and women. It could well be that the suitability of various treatment approaches may have more to do with the individual's history of drug use, personality, family history, and other individual factors than with gender.

It is possible, as Mello argues, that these two factors may combine to affect drinking patterns and their reinforcement.
