Solar energy passing through a window of clear glass is mostly visible light. Visible light that is absorbed by a material causes the particles in the material to move faster, thus increasing its temperature. Solar engineers use the knowledge of how materials react to solar radiation in designing structures that can capture and use solar energy for heating.
